| In a narrative composition, events are told in sequence and there
are lots of descriptions. The most important thing to remember is
that your job as a writer is to show, not tell. If you say that the
tree is beautiful, your readers will not be able to truly visualize and
capture the appearance of the tree. They may not believe you!.
Therefore, your job is to convince them by using nouns and verbs.
With nouns, your reader will see; with verbs, they will feel. Describe
to them what a beautiful tree looks like in detail and then they will believe
you.
Example: The deep red, bright orange and shimmering gold colored leaves of the maple tree provided me with enough shade to enjoy a mid afternoon nap. The first paragraph needs to include the following elements: 1. Introduce the characters at the beginning of a story. If a writer has developed a character well, the reader will care about the character and/or their problem. Once again, remember to show and not tell. For example, don't tell the reader that the character is cold and frightened. Instead, show the character shivering underneath layers of blankets as the wind howled on the chilly winter night. 2. Tell the setting of the event so the reader knows where and when the story takes place. 3. Tell how you felt about the event at the beginning of the occurrence. 4. Tell the problem or goal (purpose of the story).
The middle part of a narrative tell the events of your story in sequential order and shows how you felt about the events. The series of events should unfold, and lead to a problem or conflict involving the main character. The events should be elaborated with specific details to enhance the development of the story and to keep the reader engaged Dialogue
The last paragraph of the essay is the closing. You need to again reflect on the characters, setting, feelings and topic. The ending paragraph shows how the problem or goal was solved (the resolution). If your narrative tells about something that happened to you personally, tell what you thought, felt, or learned through the experience. |
